River Ehen Restoration Initiative (NW England)
This is a long-running collaboration between the Hydro-ecology lab, Universities of Aberdeen and Lleida, and the UK Environmnet Agency. Collaborations have funded 2 PhD students to-date, and Joel Blackburn is currently working on the project as a Research Assistant. The restoration involves the reconnection of a formerly diverted tributary with the aim of re-naturalising flow regimes and fluvial dynamics, so improving habitat in the river Ehen for the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera. The project is currently funded by Environment Agency and United Utilities, but previous funding has come from a variety of sources.
